THE Story

Over a Decade of Fresh Roasted Artisan Coffee

In 2009, our "Uncle Don" Batcheller and his son Nick started roasting premium grade specialty coffees in small batches on a little roaster in a side street warehouse in Sequim, WA. Friday morning tastings and two weekly farmers markets quickly created a growing group of regular bulk coffee buyers and led to a handful of local wholesale accounts. The need for a larger roaster and a retail space came quicker than expected. In 2012, Rainshadow opened its café in downtown Sequim and soon after designed and built a bigger roaster to sustain the new growth forward. Rainshadow connected with local watercolor artist named Todd Fischer who created the beautiful artwork for the labeling and branding. For the next several years, the café developed a steady pulse and became a go to in Sequim for cultural events, good food and a wide variety of delicious, unique, coffees from around the world. Rainshadow Coffee can now be found in dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, and markets across the Olympic Peninsula and neighboring communities in the Puget Sound area.

A couple of years ago, Rainshadow opened a second location in Paso Robles, CA offering wholesale and retail coffee for the Central Coast California coffee lover. This space also served as a hub to design and manufacture custom built roasters.  This work that Don loves so much has transitioned to Reno, Nevada with the opening of Rainshadow Sierra, where he plans to continue designing and building custom roasters.

After a handful of years of brainstorming with Uncle Don about opening a roasting location in Reno (where Don lived for about 25 years before heading to Sequim), native northern Nevadans Marty & Jennifer Smith, nephew and niece to Uncle Don, are excited to have opened the "Rainshadow Sierra" roasting facility in south Reno, and to have finally brought Rainshadow's fresh roasted single origin and signature blends to the Silver State.  The Sierra location in south Reno roasts for retail, wholesale and resale customers, and also has specialized brewing equipment available for retail sale.
